Indiana Meeting | Pandemic Influenza Summit 2008

Information relevant to Indiana's current pandemic influenza preparedness plan was presented July 16, 2008 during a symposium convened by the Indiana State Department of Health and the Indiana University Center for Bioethics, "The Ethics of Pandemic Influenza Planning in Indiana: What Have We Done and Where Are We Going?" The purpose of the meeting was to involve local health officials, health care providers, and other stakeholders in a discussion regarding ethical planning for pandemic influenza in Indiana. The meeting began with an overview of Indiana's current Pandemic Influenza Plan [PDF – 690 KB], and then addressed the incorporation of ethics into planning.

To date, Indiana has taken steps to address the ethical issues of altered standards of care, patient triage, vaccination and workforce management. Legal perspectives on ethical planning were also shared and new data from an Indiana public opinion survey regarding the ethics of pandemic influenza preparedness were also presented. The symposium concluded with a public discussion of the issues.
