Tucker Edmonds Contributes to work on Surrogate Decision Making within Diverse Family Structures

Monday, June 16, 2025

Brownsyne Tucker Edmonds MD, MPH, MS

IUCB faculty investigator Brownsyne Tucker Edmonds, MD, MPH, MS, co-authored a new qualitative study published in the Journal of Perinatology investigating how diverse family dynamics impact medical decision-making around periviable resuscitation. The work highlights how conflict resolution and decisional authority are understood and handled within these relationships.

Most parent dyads emphasized maternal decisional authority while acknowledging the importance of partner engagement. This partner engagement was found to be more legitimate when the intent to be involved in the child’s life was evident. This work highlights the need for more inclusive shared decision making that considers how diverse family structures are impacted by legal and emotional challenges
