Bioethics Grand Rounds is an annual lecture series hosted by the IU Center for Bioethics on a variety of topics in ethics and medicine. These sessions are hosted both in-person and online, as well as being recorded and made available in our reference center.
Kieran O'Doherty, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Guelph. His research involves involves qualitative and theoretical methods applied to social issues. He focuses mainly on social aspects of health, and ethical implications of science and technology, but he also has a strong interest in public deliberation as a method for involving broader publics in research.
There has been increasing emphasis on the importance of public trust in biomedical research. However, what actually is “trust” and how do different conceptions of trust shape studies of public trust in biomedical science? In this talk, Dr. O'Doherty will reflect on the ontological assumptions that underpin studies on trust in biomedical science. He will argue that studies predominantly conceive of trust as an intra-psychic and quantifiable phenomenon, which lends itself to manipulation rather than genuine relationship building. Dr. O'Doherty will propose that better understandings of trust include a focus on relationships and trustworthiness. Finally, he will conclude by exploring implications for biobanks and other biomedical research infrastructures.
