Chatbots: Help Some/Harm Others. Might Destroy Humanity

Chatbots are the most consequential invention in human history. The have a wonderful potential to help some patients, but have also proven to be remarkably harmful to others. There is also an appreciable risk that we are mindlessly creating our evolutionary replacements.

Allen J. Frances is Professor and Chair Emeritus of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University School of Medicine. He served as chair of the APA task force responsible for the development and revision of the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Allen Frances is also the founding editor of the Journal of Personality Disorders and the Journal of Psychiatric Practice, as well as the author or co-author of numerous books, including Saving Normal (2013), Essentials of Psychiatric Diagnosis (2013), and Twilight of American Sanity (2017).
