Intentionally Infecting Humans: Is it ethical?

Friday, May 22, 2026

12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

-

Seema K. Shah, JD, Professor in Pediatrics at Northwestern University Medical School and Director of Research Ethics at Lurie Children’s Hospital, is an expert in the fields of pediatrics and global health research ethics, as well as on ethical issues in the determination of death.

In this seminar, Seema K. Shah, JD, will first provide a brief historical overview of this research, demonstrating how ethically problematic research from the past still casts a shadow on research today. She will then explain modern CHI research, demonstrating how a fundamental lack of understanding of this research contributed to ethical controversy during the COVID-19 pandemic that persists today. Finally, she will provide an ethical framework to govern the appropriate use of this research going forward with implications for research ethics oversight more generally.

Join the seminar on Zoom here.
