Student Spotlight: Kamna Gupta

Our Student Spotlight aims to highlight promising students and their work related to bioethics. This month's student spotlight is on Kamna Gupta. Kamna Gupta is a second-year medical student at the IU School of Medicine and a former IU - Indianapolis Honor college student. Kamna also holds The Faculty Medal of Academic Distinction, the highest honor that the School of Liberal Arts awards to graduating students.

The IU Center for Bioethics has been supporting Kamna in her work to develop an ethics and anatomy curriculum to help 1st-year medical students with their experiences of attending a dissection lab. Kamna recalls her own experience in the cadaveric dissection lab. She noticed the absence of conversations on empathy, ethicality, and respect surrounding the donors and cadavers. Kamna theorizes that adding this ethical component to the anatomy curriculum would increase sensitivity towards the donors. She surveyed students to share their experiences with their anatomy course. She aims to provide resources to overcome the fears and concerns with dissection and improve professionalism that focuses on the mental health of incoming medical students.

Additionally, the IU Center for Bioethics congratulates Kamna on her recent acceptance into Harvard's Masters of Bioethics Program. She is planning on attending during the 2022 - 2023 school year. The center looks forward to supporting her in future endeavors.
