The Indiana University Center for Bioethics is pleased to announce the addition of Ryan M. Antiel, MD, MSME as a faculty investigator of the center.
Ryan Antiel, MD, MSME is a pediatric surgeon, researcher, and ethicist focused on improving the lives of children and families confronted with difficult decisions such as surgical decision-making in the face of uncertainty and end-of-life issues. He is Assistant Professor of Pediatric Surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine and Faculty Investigator at the Indiana University Center for Bioethics.
His research combines empirical approaches from the fields of epidemiology, decision-making sciences, and child outcomes with conceptual work grounded in moral philosophy and theology. He applies these approaches to address ethical challenges surrounding the care of seriously ill fetuses and neonates. He has coauthored over 70 articles and chapters addressing these topics.
Dr. Antiel earned his medical degree from Mayo Medical School and completed his general surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic. He completed pediatric surgery fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis. He was previously an Edmund Pellegrino pre-doctoral fellow at Georgetown University’s Center for Clinical Bioethics and a post-doctoral research fellow in the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine where he also obtained a Master of Science in Medical Ethics.
