Two stalwart faculty of the IU Center for Bioethics are moving from IU to other positions. Mary Ott and Aaron Carroll both joined the Center as Faculty Investigators in 2016. Dr. Ott was a faculty member of the Bioethics and Subject Advocacy Program and mentor to many bioethics students and pediatric faculty, in addition to her many prominent academic pursuits in Adolescent Medicine and Pediatric bioethics. In January 2024, Dr. Ott moved to Mount Sinai Hospital as Professor in the Departments of Global Health and Health System Design and of Pediatrics as well as Associate Director for Global Youth Health Programs at the Arnhold Institute for Global Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Dr. Carroll has been a prominent voice in health services research and health communication, perhaps most importantly as a writer for the New York Times Upshot page, as well as an author of multiple books. This role became even more important during the COVID pandemic, when Dr. Carroll commented widely on the ethical and practical issues. As IU’s Chief Health Officer, he led the university through the changes to keep campus and students safe through the different stages of the pandemic, eventually moving into other areas of wellness for students and the university. He is leaving IU in March 2024 to become President and CEO of AcademyHealth, a leading national advocacy group for health services research.
We hope and trust that Dr. Ott and Dr. Carroll will remain important members of the extended IUCB community, and we wish them the best of luck in their new endeavors!
