  • IUCB to Study Ethical Co-Design of Healthcare AI

IUCB to Study Ethical Co-Design of Healthcare AI

Monday, October 06, 2025

As part of a two-year project to use AI to generate a new rule for predicting progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD), Dr. Schwartz, Dr. Doyle, and Dr. Helen Colby (IU Kelley School of Business) will help identify and address potential ethical issues.  The ethics team will conduct a series of Community Advisory Board meetings with CKD patients to identify their concerns regarding the development of this tool and its potential use in their care, and then will develop recommendations to guide the engineers in development of the tool and adaptation for use in clinical care.  In this way, the patients will help “co-design” the tool with the engineers.  At the same time, Dr. Colby will carry out online studies to identify potential patient responses to the tool to further guide the development and use of the tool.
