On Thursday, January 18, Dr. Margaret (Meg) Gaffney, M.D., Faculty Investigator at the IU Center for Bioethics and Emerita Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine, presented the fourth IU Bioethics Grand Rounds of the academic year, on “Conscience and Ethics: When Principles Are Not Enough.” Dr. Gaffney examined two cases to show how traditional approaches to bioethics, especially the “Principlism approach,” may fail to capture important elements or uncover key issues. She described how “conscience theory” can help broaden and deepen understanding of the issues raised by these cases, and can better suggest recommendations for moving forward. Her presentation is available for viewing online on our website here.
